A Spinning Top

My world is in a tizzy of work and activity, but I didn’t want to let the week go without giving you an update.

A spinning top is a miracle of physics. It cannot stay upright on its own but once you put it in motion it stays up and even travels slightly across the floor or table. And the amount of effort put into making it move is paid back in spades as the top wobbles its way to a long spin. Looking it up it appears that a spinning top relies on the torque created by the initial spin augmented by the force of gravity that allows the top to wobble and create its own power. A miracle.

There is a similar miracle in creative work. It’s hard to get going. I need the force of the spin. If I stop, the force needs to be applied again. But once I’m spinning, I keep spinning until I exhaust the initial force plus the momentum provided by all the other forces I set in motion.

Which brings me to my current state. My spinning stopped and it’s been a heck of a time restarting the writing, even for writing blog posts or participating in social media.

I’m able to edit, but editing is not writing. Soon I will run out of things to edit and I’ll need to set the top in motion again. This time I’m going to try for a nice long spin. Nothing fancy. I’m not trying to be one of  those people who sets the top spinning from a great height, showing off by making the top bounce a few times in addition to spin. Nope. I just want a nice long spin.

So that’s where I am. Trying to get several non-creative things off my plate so that I can spin my top again.

I hope you are also spinning with creativity and joy. Be well, friends!
