Writing in Public – Day 10 – More Work on the Primary Novel & Arctic Short Story

I identified the critical scenes in my primary novel and removed everything else. It does look better without being crowded out by extraneous events. Tomorrow I will smooth out the outline and add a few new scenes for the new climax.

Today marks seven days of healthy unprocessed plant-based eating and it is going well. It feels comfortable and I’ve discovered that I love eating Brussels sprouts for breakfast. Who knew? I still need to make detailed plans for our backpacking trip. Perhaps tomorrow.

I worked on the Arctic short story, spending some time researching exactly who would have crewed an exploration vessel at the turn of the century. Here are the typical positions someone might have held:

  • Ship Captain
  • Expedition Leader
  • Second-in-Command
  • First Officer
  • Second Officer
  • Third Officer
  • Navigator
  • Engineer
  • Surgeon
  • Scientists of various specialties including meteorology, biology, botany, geology, physics, oceanography
  • Photographer
  • Artist
  • Carpenter
  • Cook
  • Able Seaman
  • Boatswain
  • Stoker
  • Steward

My protagonist is an artist hired on at the last minute.
